Nate Berkus Associates
Contrasts and Classicism in Cambridge

“Our firm strives to create interiors that have no time stamp,” declares Nate Berkus, who launched his studio at age 24 and has since become an author and, with husband Jeremiah Brent, a TV host and home furnishings designer. “We think about how the space will feel in twenty years’ time.” Rich neutral palettes and sumptuous materials have defined Berkus’s approach for decades, and this Cambridge, Massachusetts, living room, with its custom iron-and-glass pocket doors, exemplifies his deft touch. Upholstered seating in plush velvet and shearling partners with shapely tables like Angelo Mangiarotti’s 1970s marble coffee table, from Pavilion Antiques, as well as a 21st-century Cubist side table by Hayden Richer, sourced from 1stDibs. A 1stDibs seller himself since 2014, Berkus — who, with his design partner Lauren Buxbaum Gordon, has offices in Chicago and New York — furnished the room with several other 1stDibs finds, including a French Art Deco desk, mid-century Italian stools and a hair-on-hide-upholstered slipper chair from BLEND INTERIORS. “I really like the vintage French oak folding screen, which I also found on 1stDibs, in combination with the shapes in the space, especially the rustic nineteenth-century demilune table in the window,” Berkus notes. “Discovering furniture makers and designers from the past, as well as craftsmanship I admire, is my favorite part of my role.”
