Light and Dwell
Contemporary Country-House Comfort

“We are known for our fifty-fifty initiative — fifty percent vintage items and fifty percent new — providing warmth and an underlying story,” says Molly Kidd (standing at left), principal designer of the Oregon-based interior-design and custom-furniture studio Light and Dwell (which she cofounded in 2015 with company CEO Aymee Kuhlman). “Creating a room that is both sustainable and layered is always top of mind.” In the breakfast nook of an Upstate New York home with well-aged wooden floors, beams and door frames, as well as plastered walls she terms “a work of art in themselves,” Kidd set off the rectilinear wood elements with pleasing circular forms: a contemporary unlacquered-brass pendant from Roman and Williams hung above a travertine table topped by a Piet Hein vase and surrounded by walnut chairs by interior designer Amber Lewis. The result evokes both Pacific Northwest modernity and East Coast country-house charm. The still-life painting, sourced from 1stDibs, adds color and personality to the space. In an adjoining room, a curved-armed Swedish floor lamp, another 1stDibs find, keeps company with a vintage sofa and rug. The result, the designer notes, is “a timeless, textured space that feels elevated yet lived-in.”
