Hammersley received international recognition in 1959 when the Los Angeles County Museum exhibited his “hard edge” paintings along with fellow Abstract Classicists John McLaughlin, Lorser Feitelson and Karl Benjamin. The term “hard edge” developed with these four artists and refers to paintings with large areas of flat color.
Hammersley’s works are in major public collections including the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., San Francisco Museum of Art, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, La Jolla Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and in the University of New Mexico Art Museum, Albuquerque Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe.
